Feasibility Study, Regional Rail Integration, West Africa

Cardno TEC developed a feasibility study assisting the Union Economique et Monetaire Ouest-Africaine (UEMOA) in determining the technical and economic viability of developing a proposed rail line from Bamako, Mali to Mali’s southeastern border with Cote d’Ivoire. Recommendations were also given for upgrading the existing railway from Bamako, Mali to Dakar, Senegal, to which the new rail line would be linked. Cardno TEC also determined the associated costs, design and construction criteria, and an implementation plan. The goal for this rail line is to interconnect two existing railways: the Transrail system which runs from Dakar, Senegal to Bamako, Mali, and the Sitarail system running from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso to Abidjan, Cote d’lvoire. If implemented, this interconnection would enable more efficient freight and passenger transportation and more reliable port access for goods coming into and out of the landlocked UEMOA countries.
